I finally felt free from trying to make things perfect, thus stopping me from ever finishing tracks. I played and saved random melodies, I slapped effects on tracks haphazardly, because it didn't matter. Instead, I started trying out lots of sounds and lots of different instruments. I stopped agonizing over just the right sound design, perfect my EQs or un-muddying my mix, because I couldn't save my progress anyway. I don't want to spend time designing awesome stuff just to not be able to continue the next day.īut I soon realized: This was not the case at all! This little limitation completely changed how I produced music. Initially I thought that this will soon drive me crazy. However, you can save them and even export to audio. For those who don't know, the demo version is only restricted in that you cannot load FL Studio projects. I thought: "I'll probably go ahead anyway and buy this soon". Since I had just spent all my money on a shiny new audio interface and plugin bundle, I, a broke college student, just downloaded the feature-unlimited demo version of FL Studio. So off I went to the IL website, ready to rekindle my love. And I really, really missed FL Studio's piano roll. It almost felt like I had to relearn how to make music at all. While Massive was as familiar to me as it was 7 years ago and Reaper felt fresh and modern, not being able to immediately realize what's in your head again stopped me from making what I wanted to make. Every time I had an idea, I had to stop and look up how to do it. While it's a great DAW with many cool features, it halted my creativity, as I couldn't just go and do something, because I had to look up how to do things. I figured, I'd rather spend my money on quality tools than a good toolbox, given that I had already bought a great set of expensive plugins. Having lost most of the programs I had on my teen computer, I then looked around for cheaper (read: free) alternatives to FL Studio. Now, 7 years and two new computers later, I finally bought Komplete 12 Select in the summer sale. Eventually I stopped making music, as University got busy and I just lost interest for a while. In about 5 years of making music with FL studio, I finished 5 songs. With the easy availability of it and tutorials, it was a super accessible to people new to music production, especially in the EDM community.īut, also like many other people, I always struggled finishing songs. And like many people, I started with FL Studio. To conclude, FL Studio is a well-rounded and efficient piece of software, yet it is mostly dedicated to professionals, as many novices might find it confusing. When I was around 15, I started making electronic music. Also, you should know that significant storage space is required for saving the generated tunes, as well as the additional samples and instruments that one may download from the Internet. A last assessmentįL Studio is quite light on computer resources, yet a faster machine allows users to perform more actions in the same time or edit tracks without being bothered by huge loading times. Plugins can be added for improved functionality, although the software comes with almost everything one might need for taking the first steps as a beginner, such as instruments, mixers, special effects, filters and many other tools. A virtual piano is also included, so that you can be sure you can create the song or effect you had stuck in your head. Use a virtual piano and support for pluginsĪlways running in full screen, this application encompasses a lot of functions in the left side of the screen, while the right side is exclusively used for mixing the uploaded tune. Nonetheless, comprehensive Help contents are enclosed, so that, in time, beginners can also learn how to handle it. It consists of a myriad of buttons corresponding to the multiple options available, which might seem a bit too much. Less experienced users or those who have never worked with a similar program before might not have an easy time during the first use of FL Studio. It takes a while, but only because it has to copy a lot of instruments and samples. Seamless setup, yet pretty overwhelming GUIĪlthough it is such powerful software, it is quite easy to install FL Studio. FL Studio is a powerful software solution that allows the creation of songs and loops using professional tools such as state of the art mixers, equalizers, integrated instruments and more.
